Another reason why schools are not fulfilling the goals of education lies within the fault of the system.1  In his essay entitled “Learning to Read,” Frederick Douglass, a former slave owned by the Huld family,  reiterates this belief as he retells how he self-taught himself, along with the help of the Mistress Sophia and the “poor white boys,” for the system of that time often failed to teach everyone, as does the system continue to fail today.2  Some say, though, that with the popularity of young adult literature and teachers being trained in Literacy Lab type models, more students are reading full-length novels than ever before.3  Despite this, however, many students still do not know on what reading level they read, some graduating several grades below grade level.4 Another way the school systems fail, as portrayed in the poetry in the “School Life” chapter in Poems by Adolescents and Adults, stems from administrators not supporting the teachers, as narrated in the poem “My Class – Fifth Grade.”5  While teachers may have the heart for their students, in some districts, leaders issue mandates regarding limits of care for students; consequently, students suffer due to the loss of food, security, and emotional support.6  This idea is also portrayed in the poem relating how teachers and administrators use the “discipline of the desk” to maintain control of the classroom atmosphere, again illustrating how many teachers prefer to drill the skills rather than support the genius.7  Thus, schools, those institutions of learning, remain at fault for the many methods used day after day to the pure boredom and detriment of the students.8
